Why Authentic Shilajit Is Expensive
The Price Difference Is Real — and It Reflects Real Differences
Shilajit ranges from under £15 to over £80 for a similar-sized jar. Both ends of that range are labelled “authentic Himalayan Shilajit.” They are not the same product. The price difference reflects what was done — and what was skipped — to produce each one.
What Drives the Cost of Authentic Shilajit
High-Altitude Collection
Authentic Shilajit is collected by hand from remote sites above 3,000 metres in the Pakistan Himalayas during a narrow seasonal window. The logistics are complex, the access is difficult, and the supply is finite. This cannot be scaled or cheapened without compromising the raw material.
Multi-Stage Purification
Raw Shilajit is not safe to consume. Multi-stage water-based purification — repeated multiple times with controlled low-temperature processing — removes contaminants while concentrating fulvic acid. Each purification cycle reduces yield. The more rigorous the purification, the higher the cost per gram of finished product.
Independent Batch Testing
Every batch tested by Eurofins Scientific — covering heavy metals, microbial safety, pesticide residues, and identity verification — is a real cost absorbed for every production run. Brands that skip this step reduce their costs substantially and give buyers no independent verification.
BSCG Certification
Ongoing batch-level BSCG certification requires continuous testing and independent programme auditing. It is not a one-time fee. It is a continuous commitment built into the cost of every jar.
Premium Packaging
Dark glass jars with airtight seals cost more than plastic. They also preserve the product’s potency from our facility to your shelf. The packaging cost is real and deliberate.
What Cheap Shilajit Cuts
A £15 jar of Shilajit has eliminated most or all of the above. Lower-altitude sourcing. Minimal purification. No independent testing. No certification. Plastic packaging. The saving is real. So is what you are not getting.
