Heavy Metals in Shilajit: Safety Standards and How We Test

Why Heavy Metals Matter in Shilajit

Shilajit forms over millions of years as organic matter decomposes under mountain rock. The same geological process that concentrates beneficial minerals and fulvic acid can also concentrate heavy metals — lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium — from the surrounding rock strata.

Raw, unprocessed Shilajit collected from mountain rock faces can carry elevated heavy metal levels. Without rigorous purification and independent testing, those metals can end up in the product you consume.

This is not a reason to avoid Shilajit. It is a reason to buy only from brands that take purification and testing seriously.

The Four Heavy Metals That Matter Most

  • Lead (Pb): Accumulates in bone and soft tissue. Particularly harmful to the nervous system. California Prop 65 limit: 0.5µg per daily serving.
  • Arsenic (As): Occurs naturally in soil and rock. Inorganic arsenic is the toxic form. USP oral limit: 10µg per daily serving.
  • Mercury (Hg): A potent neurotoxin that accumulates in kidney and brain tissue. USP oral limit: 0.3µg per daily serving.
  • Cadmium (Cd): Accumulates primarily in the kidneys with a very long biological half-life. USP oral limit: 4.1µg per daily serving.

How We Test: Eurofins ICP-MS

Every batch of Golden Shilajit Official purified Himalayan Shilajit resin and drops is tested for heavy metals by Eurofins Scientific using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) — one of the most sensitive analytical techniques available, capable of detecting metals at parts per billion concentrations.

Results are tested against California Prop 65 limits — among the strictest heavy metal standards in the world. A batch that does not pass is not released.

Our Heavy Metal Standards

  • Lead: Below 0.5µg per daily serving (Prop 65)
  • Arsenic: Below 10µg per daily serving (USP)
  • Mercury: Below 0.3µg per daily serving (USP)
  • Cadmium: Below 4.1µg per daily serving (USP)

Verify the Results

Our Eurofins heavy metal results are published on the Lab Reports page — batch-specific, no sign-up required.
