Shilajit for Anxiety & Depression: What the Science Says (2026)

Shilajit’s adaptogenic and neuroprotective properties have attracted research interest in the context of anxiety and depression. The evidence is preliminary but mechanistically plausible — and worth understanding clearly before drawing conclusions.

Mechanisms That May Support Mental Health

  • HPA axis regulation: Shilajit’s adaptogenic properties help regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, reducing cortisol — chronically elevated cortisol is strongly associated with anxiety and depression
  • Mitochondrial support: Fulvic acid supports mitochondrial ATP production. Mitochondrial dysfunction is increasingly implicated in mood disorders
  • Neuroprotection: Fulvic acid has been shown in laboratory studies to inhibit tau protein aggregation and may have broader neuroprotective effects
  • Mineral support: Magnesium deficiency is associated with anxiety and depression. Shilajit’s trace mineral content includes magnesium in ionic form

What the Evidence Does Not Support

There are no clinical trials demonstrating that Shilajit treats anxiety or depression in humans. The mechanisms above are plausible but have not been validated in controlled human studies for mental health outcomes. Shilajit is not a substitute for evidence-based mental health treatment.

Dosage
